Collecting “Olympic” medals : the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park winter series

Medal.jpgI’ll admit that the major draw for me when I first did the 10km in the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park about a year ago was the idea of getting a medal with the word “Olympic” on it.  Granted, the versions that Jess, Mo and Greg have probably don’t also have the words “Park” or “Elizabeth” or “Queen” on them, but let’s not ruin this with small technicalities….  Continue reading

Spring/Summer Round Up 2017

Autumn is upon us and we’re back to floodlights at the track, so it seems like a good time to reflect on the year so far. Despite the silence on here, there has been plenty of running going on in club colours

The club bookended the summer with two relay events.  Over 20-21 May, the team circled London in Green Belt Relay.  On 3rd September, we fielded two teams in River Relay (the Wanderers and the Waverers).

Team Clapham Runners had lots of representatives running in the both the Spring Surrey Badger Half Marathon in March and the Harry Hawkes 10 in July.

As well as team events, we’ve also had plenty of individual honours – in 10kms, Halves, Marathons (including London, Manchester, Rome and the Hardmoors White Horse Trail marathons just to name a few) right up to Damian completing the “Up” run of the Comrade Ultra Marathon in South Africa.

So, a good spring and summer, then.  Good work team CR!

Clapham Runners abroad 2016

Our club runners are fans of race tourism…several of us are planning trips away this year, and what better way to indulge in a spot of race tourism! Last year Steve raced the furthest away from home, in New Zealand, 11,470 miles away.

This year we started out looking for races overseas…but frankly there are some amazing photos of our club members all over the world, and t-shirts or medals don’t matter. Great to see everyone having fun with sport wherever they are!

Steve (South Africa parkrun, February), Marie Ann and Kieran (New Zealand parkruns x2 in New Zealand, February), Amanda (Paris marathon, April), Rob (Vietnam, November), Damian’s Comrades Marathon (South Africa, June), Jono (Brussels and Disneyland Paris halfs in September and October), Alison (Berlin marathon), Steve (travelling again! St Lucia, December 2016) and Annika (various throughout Greece, year round!).

London Marathon 2017 club place

Congratulations Frank, you are running for Clapham Runners at the London Marathon on 23 April 2017 – we will be there to cheer you on! Drawn by coach, Jon Munroe, and Santa’s little helper Hannah, at the track session on Thursday 8th December. Let the marathon training begin!

Frank is joining a couple of other club members at the start line – Niamh has a charity place for the Teenage Cancer Trust, Rob has carried forward his ballot place from 2016…who else will be running?

Clapham Runners, as a registered Athletics Club with England Athletics, can apply for a guaranteed entry for one of its members. As a member benefit, your name can go in the hat. This year only two members applied for the club place – so the odds are much, much higher than the main ballot!

River Relay 2016

Well done to our two teams of Clapham Runners (Clappers A & B) who ran the Thames River Relay, now a firm fixture in the club calendar. Joining 75 other teams to complete the 26.2 mile baton relay organised by the Stragglers Run Club, our teams finished with impressive team marathon times around the 3h30 mark.

Part of the race is not just first to finish – but there is also a prize (charity donation) for the team which finishes closest to their predicted finish times. There’s also a friendly competition amongst the club to complete all five stages of the event in different years to run the full marathon… Damian took the lead this year as the first club member to run 4 of the 5 legs!

Both teams this year ran faster than expected (never usually a problem!), and thanks to Frank’s mastermind of pick-ups and handovers, we were all at the Hawker Centre finish to watch the glory leg cross the line.

  • Clapham Runners Clappers B – 3h28m44s
  • Clapham Runners Clappers A – 3h35m19s

Great fun, and we will be back next year!

Damian storms the Comrades Marathon in 10h22m

A huge achievement and a hard-earned finisher’s medal. Fantastic! Well done from all of us!!

Described as the greatest ultra marathon in the world, the South African race runs between the capital of the Kwazulu-Natal province, Pietermaritzburg, and the coastal city of Durban, the race alternates annually between the “up run” from Durban and the “down run” from Pietermaritzburg. Luckily 2016 was a ‘down’ year!

Some 22,000 runners started the race, with a strict 12 hour cut-off. A new course record was set this year by David Gateba in 5h18m19s.

WhatsApp helps running club lose virginity

We did it! Well done Team Clapham Runners. 11 runners, 3 cars, 1 team, 219.8miles, 3,605m climbed (and 3,605m descended!), 500+ WhatsApp messaged exchanged and 219.8 miles of the Green Belt Relay achieved – and we finished a very respectable 30th out of 40 teams, and 17th of 25 mixed teams.

We ran 219.8 miles over the weekend as part of the Stragglers RC Green Belt Relay. It is the first time that we as a club have taken part, and how much fun it was! A great event which mixes the social side of running with competition. Map reading skills and uneven footwork were put to the test, in stunning surroundings from the Surrey Hills to Essex, climbing mountains (!), running along rivers and chasing landmarks.

We took so many photos, the GBR 2016 has its very own photo gallery here.

Special thanks to Frank for masterminding the logistics of pick-ups and drop-offs; to Steve, Frank and Ann-Marie as our drivers, and to Rob and Arabella helping out with marshalling – and to team Clapham Runners, Martin, Krysia, Amanda, James, Matt, Ann-Marie, Ana, Peter, Maddie, Siobhan and Steve!
