(Runner blog post) A different take on Marathon training

I came across this article via the US Runners World group on Facebook and am sharing it as it seems to chime with what Jon says to us and how he trains us.


Obviously, it’s written by a 2’40” runner, but the point is well made that it can apply to us mere mortals too.

Could be the way forward for VLM 2011….

    I did 16 with a mate on Boxing Day and it made me want to throw my shoes in the river. Cold, dark, icy and just too bloody far. And no, I don't really know why we did it, other than for my mate Pete (from Richmond) to feel what it's like north of a half-marathon.

    So, this article caught my eye as a different approach to those long slogs.

    Great article.I can't find the logic of above 16 miles.We might all buy into less (but harder) is more. For the April 17 Marathon crowds the 18 week programme is a little late but for May 22 Edinburgh we still have a fortnight's breather. I'll have a go at twisting the days to produce a programme with Thursdays as speed/strength. Or is that taking it too literally? There's plenty of miles in the programme – whatever way you look at it.


  • It's what I needed to get me out of the door more often, if only for 4-6 mile runs. I started at Week 4 today; we'll see how it goes. Running both Saturday and Sunday will be my biggest issue.


  • Link showing fine now – thanks! Wow, really like it – those 20milers are such a hard slog!! It sounds like he does the shorter distances properly though!! You're crazy – I was still eating and drinking on boxing day!
